Word Curiosity

So, a few questions for you lucky readers (all 3 of you) to ponder:

Curious to curiosity...what happens to the 'u'?

Now, the '-try' in the words gentry, infantry, bigotry, ancestry, geometry, chemistry, country, carpentry, industry, pageantry, and wintry rhyme with 'tree'. Yet, the word 'try' is pronounced as 'tri'. Why is this???

This is how much of a dork I am...I honestly spend time trying to figure these word things out. The English language is so complex! And fun!
